The Story of the Map

Tim Williamson

We are getting great feedback from people popping into our new shop in Parkhouse Street with our massive map of Ayr. There is a story behind it that’s worth telling as it underpins everything Key-Lets has stood for in the last twenty years of lettings.

Not so long ago on a drab estate agent cluttered street was a sad, unloved empty shell of a shop. Why was this poor unit so neglected?

It wasn’t the victim of the recession – it stood empty way before then.

It wasn’t full of damp and unusable – as we prove today.

No, it was just commercial chess that kept this tarnished gem from gleaming.

When it came back on the market, we jumped straight in. Out went all the partition walls, dodgy wallpaper, 70’s hanging strip lights. Out went the ancient single line wires, metal conduit and switch boxes.

Stuffed behind one of the switch boxes was a dog eared, torn street map of Ayr – its use as padding no longer needed. A thin red biro mark circled Parkhouse Street and the word ‘Here’ lay beside it.

A piece of discarded history reused by an electrician forty years ago. It was great to find and got us thinking about a wall map. Something no other letting agent or estate agent has and a first for Ayrshire.

Soon all the walls were plastered and prepped for painting,

The five wallpaper strips that made up the map sat snugly in their cardboard tubes. Justin from Able Decorators stood back, hummed and hawed, paced a bit, stopped, looked, paced a bit more and handed the brush and scissors to Gabby. After all, Gabby is Ayrshire’s Mr Wallpaper and Justin’s his boss.

Tucked in behind the map, held in by new plaster is a time capsule.

In it is the old torn street map, a print out of what our map will look like (with a red circle), a Bank of Scotland Jack Nicklaus £5 Note and a Scottish £1 note. Yes, back then you could still get them.

So, what has a map to do with Key-Lets?

We believe anything is possible if you make the effort and work with purpose. We do not believe in cutting corners, both in our work environment and in our services to landlords.

We have the same focused outlook when it comes to protecting our landlords from risk. From out-sourced referencing, rental protection, lease updates, comprehensive inventories and all the little extras that make up Key-Lets Property Management.

So, if you are passing down Parkhouse Street and see Key-Lets shining out at you, drop in for a real coffee and a chat. You see, Key-Lets lead where others follow.
